Munitions Maintenance Shop
Ellington field JRB, Houston, TX

The building (approx. 3102 sq ft) is a one story earth-covered and filled reinforced concrete structure. It is designed to resist the effects of an accidental explosion from neighboring magazines. Foundation is reinforced concrete continuous spread footings and the floor is reinforced concrete slab (on-grade).

Explosive Components Facility

Sandia National Labs
P.O. Box 5800
Albuquerque, NM

98,000 sq ft, 1-story blast-resistant reinforced concrete and reinforced concrete masonry, explosive (up to 1.5 kg of TNT) laboratories, offices, firing/testing bays and chambers and magazines.  Unique corridor and maze arrangement (tested) greatly reduced the construction costs and experiment (test firing) set-up time by eliminating blast doors.  The facility provided total containment of fragments and gases from accidental and planned detonations.

Ordnance Environment Test Facility

NSWC Crane, IN

17,052 sq ft, 1-story reinforced concrete facility used to test explosive ordnances and designed to protect personnel in adjacent bays or test cells and offices from an accidental explosion of up 100# of TNT.  This facility contains test cells, and harden control rooms, conference rooms, restrooms, and open work station areas.  Stand-off distances and explosive capacities allowed the use of the more economical stirrup type reinforcement.  Innovated blast-resistant wall penetration details were also provided.

Explosives Blending & Processing Fac.

DOE Mound Labs, Miamisburg, OH

3,550 sq ft, 1-story reinforced concrete facility used for blending operations of Trident II propellants.  This facility was designed to contain and prevent propagation between the processing bays of an accidental explosion of class 1.1 explosive materials.   Processing bays included two 10 kg (23#), two 25 kg (56#), and two 50 kg (112#) rooms.  This facility also contains a remote operations control room, administration area, inert storage room, and an equipment room hardened for protection of it's occupants.  For economy the reinforced concrete walls and roofs of the processing bays were designed to a maximum of 12 degree support rotation and constructed using laced type reinforcement.  Blowout panels and doors were designed to vent the effects of a detonation and reduce costs of the blast-resistant walls and roof.
